Grayscale mode generates four bits of information for each dot of the original
(the other modes record only one bit for each dot). For every dot recorded, the scanner can store a four-bit binary number corresponding to one of 16 levels of gray (24=16).

Because a grayscale scan records four bits of information for each pixel, the memory or disk space used by one scan is four times as much as for a line art or halftone scan of the same size scan area, which records only one bit per pixel. Recall, however, that the data is automatically spooled to the hard disk.
